Some woman wasted three years of my life, and all I got was this lousy t-shirt. Still, I think it’s one of the best melodies and chord progressions that I’ve written.
As an aside, I’d just like to say that I want to marry the snare drum sound in this recording.
lyrics
This is a cautionary tale.
I've tried to no avail
to make you change your heart.
I was a little bit too late
with my attempt to wipe the slate
and make a brand-new start.
Now I know
about the point
of no return.
Now it's dead.
Now you've said
your final word.
It always takes me way too long
to see how I was wrong.
The lesson learned was hard.
So, I'm the fool that got away.
I know what you would say,
that it wasn't in the cards
that we played
every night
'cause you're daddy's girl.
So, I fold.
For I've been told
your final word.
I was right there.
I watched it happen.
Still, I don't know what to say.
I was holding
all of my dreams.
Then I threw them all . . .
You want to hurry this along.
I want to write a song
and make the time stand still.
I would give
every note
I've ever heard
for the chance
to change my circumstance,
to be part of your plans -
your final word.
