about

I’m pretty, bordering on very, reclusive socially. I was an only child and grew up in a very isolated environment (I was raised by wolves until I was four, but that's not important now). As a result, I've never really been comfortable around people - I'd much rather be in a room with some records and instruments.

This song is pretty emotionally naked, even if it is disguised as a pop tune - sort of the spoonful of sugar principle. The pure sound section features pieces of recordings of my father, grandma and grandpa, now all gone, found on reel-to-reel tapes recorded in the ‘40s and ‘50s.

lyrics

I pop out my head then run and hide
where I'm alone. Where I'm alone.
Pass up night with friends to stay inside.
My room I roam. My room I roam.

'Cause I don't like to show my face around.
'Cause I'm afraid I'll let some people down.

Cut myself off from my family.
Avoid the phone. Avoid the phone.
Frightened by the things that they might see.
I can't go home. I can't go home.

'Cause I don't like to show my face around.
'Cause I'm afraid I'll let some people down.
So, I just go off in my world of sound.
I'm safe in sound.

When I'm forced to go outside,
I may even look you in the eye
(I've taken time and learned to play the role).
You'll probably think that I'm okay.
(As an actor, I'm Olivier.)
Still, inside the monster's taking hold.

Drag myself onstage and face my fear
I strike a pose. I strike a pose.
Sometimes I pretend that you're not here.
My eyes are closed. My eyes are closed.

'Cause I don't like to show my face around.
'Cause I'm afraid I'll let you people down.
So, I just go off in my world of sound.
I'm safe in sound.

I'm safe in sound.
