A little ditty for the Red States. Modern day folk-ballad about Bernadine Dorhn and the Weathermen, who formed an offshoot of the SDS and wound up bombing government buildings (while they were empty) to protest US involvement in Viet Nam and the targeting and assasination of leaders of the counter-culture.
Wayne Kramer, formerly of the MC5, came in and added the authentic sound of a ‘60s musical revolutionary. Pete Thomas (from the Attractions/Imposters) bashed at the drums.
This song comes with an accompanying study guide for grades 8 - 12.
lyrics
A Chicago girl of well-heeled means.
At the movement’s front still in her teens.
She looked at the world and drew her lines
and she broke on through to the other side.
With the Freaks - An army by her side.
In the streets - revolutionary times.
They were free
and they'd soon be going down to the
Underground.
The pigs killed Fred Hampton in cold blood.
And that flicked the switch that set them off.
So they’d blow-up buildings, settle scores.
It was their way to bring home the war.
They were freaks - an army side by side.
In the streets - revolutionary times.
They were free - Free - FREE!
And they’d bring the system down from the
Underground.
Well they slowly faded out of view
as the ‘60’s “we” turned “me” and “you”.
But she was still believing even when
she went to the Feds and turned herself in.
No more freaks - the revolution died.
Now the streets - they await another try.
Who will be - be - be
the next generation bound for the
Underground?
